Welcome to the ninth edition of CUHK in Focus.

A few weeks into the new school year, we are still feeling the excitement from witnessing students and staff making their way back to campus after a semester-long hiatus from face-to-face teaching and learning. The gradual resumption of more physical activities means many more opportunities for us to fulfill our vision to achieve “Excellence with Purpose and Responsibility”.

Homecoming of outstanding CUHK alumnus

CUHK takes pride in our supportive alumni community which now stands at over 250,000 members spanning different countries and regions and professions. Not only have our ever-growing alumni family made it possible for CUHK to go from strength to strength, but they have also been influential in the social and economic development of Hong Kong, our nation and the world across generations.

CUHK in Focus informs you about the latest accomplishments of outstanding CUHK members in creating social impact and making the world a better place. In this edition, we are honoured to feature our distinguished Chung Chi alumnus, Mr Tang Ping-keung, Chris, Secretary for Security, and to welcome him back to CUHK campus to attend the flag-raising ceremony to inaugurate the new academic year. I have had inspiring exchanges with him on the future developments of the University, in particular, how we could enhance students’ awareness of their roles as responsible citizens and future leaders to support the growth of our city and our country. Mr Tang also took the opportunity to visit Ying Lin Tang in Chung Chi College to reminisce the good old days as an undergraduate student resident!

Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK (on the right), met with distinguished Chung Chi alumnus, Mr Tang Ping-keung, Chris, Secretary for Security, to discuss the future developments of the University.

In memory of Dr Vincent H.C. Cheng

Yesterday, dignitaries and members of the CUHK community and the public gathered at the Hong Kong Funeral Home in remembrance of Dr Vincent H.C. Cheng, former Council Chairman and a dedicated alumnus of CUHK, who passed away on 28 August 2022. A memorial service was held at St. John’s Cathedral this morning and many tributes were made to bid farewell to Dr Cheng. Dr Cheng’s remarkable contributions to Hong Kong have gone far beyond the banking and finance sector, and his long-standing commitment to CUHK, as well as his unyielding passion and unfailing service for Hong Kong, will long be remembered and sorely missed. May we express our deepest sympathies for the Cheng’s family.

CUHK Entrepreneur Day 2022

Our successful alumni communities have been working together to contribute to many worthwhile causes, one of which being to support CUHK’s cultivation of the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs.

The CUHK Alumni Torch Fund is an endowment fund founded in 2014 by a group of dedicated alumni and supported by the Alumni Affairs Office. One of its main objectives is to help CUHK alumni, in particular the young ones, to strengthen their competitive advantage and exposure to entrepreneurial opportunities. The CUHK Entrepreneurs Alliance initiated by the Fund has been committed to organising CUHK Entrepreneur Day since 2015, an annual, University-wide flagship event to showcase CUHK’s distinctive entrepreneurship and innovations.

CUHK Entrepreneur Day is an annual flagship event for CUHK members to showcase their distinctive entrepreneurial achievements and innovations.

This year’s CUHK Entrepreneur Day is set to take place this week, on September 23 and 24 (Friday and Saturday), at Yasumoto International Academic Park. Supported by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and the CUHK Entrepreneurs Alliance, the two-day event features a variety of exhibition booths, talks, workshops and consultancy and talent matching services under one roof. It serves to provide a one-stop information and exchange platform for CUHK students and graduates, experienced entrepreneurs from the circle of CUHK alumni and general public at large. The final of the 6th CUHK Entrepreneurship Competition will also take place this Saturday afternoon. Representatives of eight outstanding CUHK start-ups will present their projects and entrepreneurial achievements to adjudicators to compete for the honour of the most promising ventures and attractive cash prizes to help bring their ground-breaking business ideas to life.

Watch the video to know more about the eight finalists of the 6th CUHK Entrepreneurship Competition.

CUHK Entrepreneur Day is a much-anticipated fiesta that brings together all CUHK students, staff and alumni who are interested or currently engaged in entrepreneurship to showcase their innovation and creativity. It builds an enriching and enabling ecosystem for the pursuit of entrepreneurial opportunities within and outside campus. I sincerely call for your support of this meaningful event. It is my sincere hope that CUHK members can inspire one another on the pathway to innovation and entrepreneurship to realise their aspiration of translating research findings into tangible benefits to society and to the world.
