Welcome to the 82nd edition of CUHK in Focus.
This issue marks the first edition of the newly renamed column, From the VC’s Desk. I hope this platform will continue to provide me with the opportunity to share updates of CUHK and my personal thoughts on various aspects of the University’s development with the wider community.
This inaugural message coincides with the launch of CUHK Strategic Plan 2026–2030. It guides the University’s development towards impact-oriented outcomes and lasting societal contributions over the next five years. The launch of CUHK 2026–2030 is a cornerstone of our forward momentum towards the aspiration of “Leaping to Greatness”. It translates our strategic priorities into coordinated institutional action through the TIGER framework, which is built around five interconnected themes.
| T | Talent attraction and development |
| I | Institutional development |
| G | Global and alumni engagement |
| E | Education and student experience |
| R | Research and innovation. |
Guided by the TIGER’s Leaps, the University will build on our strong legacy of academic excellence and societal contribution to translate vision into collective action, advancing towards an even more impactful future with focus and sustained momentum. We shall proactively seize emerging opportunities and navigate challenges with humility, creativity, and dedication to our founding mission.
CUHK 2026–2030 reflects the collective wisdom of the CUHK community. Its development involved a rigorous and inclusive consultation process that enabled us to gather insights and innovative suggestions from stakeholders of the University. I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone who participated in the planning process.
I also had the opportunity to share this inspiring blueprint with media representatives at a luncheon last week. We look forward to sharing our aspirations with other partners and seeking their support as CUHK takes its next leap towards greatness for the benefit of society.
Impactful mainland partnerships
Over the past couple of weeks, we have made significant progress in fostering partnerships with our counterparts in the Chinese Mainland. In late July, we celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao University Alliance (GHMUA) by hosting its Annual Meeting and Presidents’ Forum on campus. Founded a decade ago by CUHK in collaboration with Sun Yat-sen University and the University of Macau, GHMUA serves as a premier higher education platform, building on the efforts of elite universities in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) to pursue academic excellence, nurture young talents, and render community service. As a Vice-Chair institution, CUHK has been playing a central role in working closely with partner universities in the GBA to strengthen regional partnerships and advance education and innovation. Over the past decade, the Alliance has grown both scale and impact, and now comprises 52 member institutions. We were delighted to mark this important milestone with more than 180 government leaders, university heads and delegates from across the three regions.
CUHK took a significant step forward in advancing medical innovation in the GBA with the establishment of the Greater Bay Area Clinical Trial Centre (Guangzhou Nansha) with the People’s Government of Nansha District, Guangzhou and Guangzhou First People’s Hospital. As the first Hong Kong university to participate in the development of GBA, CUHK has established multiple platforms to advance talent development, research, and the translation of innovation outcomes into real-world applications, contributing to the nation’s development. The inauguration of the new Centre in Nansha represents a remarkable development in the year of the 20th anniversary of CUHK’s presence in the GBA. It is also an important milestone as the University deepens its integration into the national research and innovation ecosystem.
Filling the campus with new energy
As a series of orientation programmes take place over the next few weeks, our campus is filled with vibrancy and optimism of our new students. I look forward to seeing how far the transformative CUHK education will take them. Meanwhile, I would like to show my appreciation to the senior students who have devoted their time and efforts to organising a broad range of activities to familiarise their juniors with the many facets of university life before the new academic year begins. I am delighted to welcome you all back to campus in September.
I look forward to sharing more stories with you in our next edition.
