A decade of collaborative development among Greater Bay Area Universities

14 August 2026

The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance (GHMUA) jointly launched by CUHK, Sun Yat-sen University and the University of Macau celebrated its 10th anniversary this year. To commemorate this important milestone, CUHK, which serves as one of the Alliance’s Vice-Chair institutions, hosted the GHMUA’s 10th Anniversary Annual Meeting and Presidents’ Forum on 24 July. The event brought together more than 180 participants, comprising university leaders and government officials across the region, with a specific focus on joint efforts to promote the sustainable growth of the Alliance and the Greater Bay Area (GBA).

GHMUA was founded in November 2016, as a platform for collaboration on education and research across the region. Over the past decade, it has achieved remarkable success, continuing to grow in scale and influence. It now comprises 49 member institutions, including 33 universities in Guangdong Province, nine universities from Hong Kong and seven institutions from Macao. As a co-founding institution, CUHK has played a central role in mobilising research and education resources, fostering collaboration and exchange among member institutions, and propelling innovation and talent development in the GBA through the Alliance.

A highlight of the Annual Meeting was the President’s Forum, held under the theme “A Decade of Cooperation, Shared Success in the GBA”. Discussions focused on how universities can better respond to societal needs and leverage their distinctive strengths, as well as how disciplinary development and innovation ecosystems can support national priorities in advancing self-reliance and strength in science and technology and talent-driven development.

The event also featured a special exhibition showcasing the Alliance’s achievements over the past decade, alongside the launch of a commemorative video. In addition, the inaugural inter-university performance was held, bringing together award-winning student groups from member institutions. They presented a variety of artistic performances, demonstrating the vibrancy of youth talent and reflecting the cultural integration fostered among the three regions.
