The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS) at CUHK shared its latest research progress at the 2026 Annual Meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), held in Denver, USA, from 3 to 7 May. Members of the Department received international recognitions and contributed to academic committees, supporting the advancement of global vision science.

The CUHK delegation included Professor Calvin Pang Chi-pui, S.H. Ho Professor of Visual Sciences, Professor Jason Yam Cheuk-sing, Professor Carol Cheung Yim-lui, together with academic and research staff and students. Members of the Department presented their research and actively engaged in academic discussions and professional exchange.

Among the recognitions, Professor Carol Cheung was awarded the ARVO Gold Fellow distinction, which acknowledges sustained academic contributions and professional service to the field of vision science. Professor Cheung’s research focuses on retinal imaging and the application of artificial intelligence, contributing to earlier identification of eye diseases and systemic conditions, and supporting improvements in public health.

Dr Emma Ran Anran, Scientific Officer, received the ARVO Foundation Early Career Clinician Scientist Research Award. The award is presented annually to a small number of early-career clinician-scientists in recognition of their ability to integrate clinical practice with research innovation. Dr Ran’s research applies data science and artificial intelligence to enhance disease prediction and clinical decision-making, demonstrating strong potential for future application.

In addition, Postdoctoral Fellows Dr Chen Xiunian and Dr Du Lin, postgraduate students Fang Danqi and Zhou Jiaying, Dr Anakin Lai Chu-kwan, Clinical Tutor (Honorary), and medical student Ryan Fong Hong-yu were awarded ARVO Travel Grants. Dr Chu Wai-kit also serves as Chair of the ARVO Global Members Committee, contributing to initiatives that support international member engagement.
