United College kicks off 70th anniversary celebrations

16 April 2026

On 4 March, United College held a ceremony to launch its 70th Anniversary celebrations. The event raised the curtain on a series of celebrations, under the theme “United in Virtue We Rise to New Heights”, that mark 70 years since the College was founded. Teachers, students, alumni and friends gathered to celebrate this milestone.

During his speech, Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Dennis Lo Yuk-ming said that for 70 years, United College had upheld the spirit of its motto, “Ming De Xin Min” (“make one’s virtues shine and renew the people”), and has nurtured countless outstanding talents for society in a rapidly changing era. Subsequently, Chairman of the College Board of Trustees Lina Yan Hau-yee and Head of College Professor Stephen Wong Heung-sang also delivered speeches.

During the ceremony, the seven officiating guests slowly poured colourful sand into a specially made kick-off device, symbolising the spirit of unity and teamwork, like grains of sand building a tower. Professor Lo, Ms Yan and Professor Wong then proceeded to the Wu Chung Library to officiate at the opening of the 2025-26 Hop Wai Artist-in-Residence Exhibition, created and curated by this year’s Hop Wai Artist-in-Residence, Professor Ross Yau Wing-fung. The professor led guests on a guided tour through his ink art exhibition Variations in an Unadorned Space. Afterwards, guests, teachers and students moved to a tea reception, mingling on the lawn outside the Wu Chung Library.

This ceremony marks the opening salvo in a series of events to celebrate the College’s 70th anniversary, including an anniversary banquet, a series of lectures and dialogues, high-table dinners, and a reunion camp.
