University appointments

The University Council has approved the appointment of Professor Jiang Liwen (left) as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (External Affairs) and the appointment of Professor Alan Cheung Chi-keung (right) as Dean of Education.
Professor Jiang Liwen is currently Choh-ming Li Professor of Life Sciences and Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Science. He takes up the position of Pro-Vice-Chancellor (External Affairs) on a concurrent basis for a term of two years starting from 1 November, overseeing international and the Chinese Mainland affairs.
Professor Jiang said: “My vision is to drive the development of CUHK through international network and research excellence, enhance academic collaborations particularly with reputable institutions on the Chinese Mainland, facilitate faculties in establishing external connections and alliances, and share successful experiences with academic, industry and government partners.”
Professor Jiang has been with the University since 2000 and was promoted to full Professor in 2007. He has achieved remarkable success in scientific research, specialising in plant cell biology. Over the years, he has received numerous local and national research awards and led large research projects, actively collaborating with Chinese Mainland and international partners. He has held several roles within the Faculty of Science, demonstrating outstanding leadership in advancing academic development and fostering external collaborations.
Professor Alan Cheung Chi-keung will assume duty as Dean of Education for a term of five years starting from 6 January 2026. He is currently Professor and Chair in the Department of Educational Administration and Policy and serves as Director of the Centre for University and School Partnership.
Professor Cheung said: “My vision is to establish our faculty as a leading centre for educational research and teacher preparation, focusing on academic excellence, innovative teaching, internationalisation and social impact. I look forward to working with my colleagues to achieve these goals and advance education locally, regionally and internationally.”
Professor Cheung joined CUHK in 2012. His primary research areas include school improvement, international education, educational technology and research synthesis. He has a prolific academic research record, has received numerous awards, and has been consistently recognised as one of the “World’s Top 2% Scientists”. Additionally, Professor Cheung has deep insights into Hong Kong’s education sector and also maintains strong collaborations with institutions in the Chinese Mainland and overseas, actively promoting exchanges between the Faculty of Education and educational institutions in countries and regions along the Belt and Road.
Meanwhile, Mr Symon Wong Yu-wing has been re-appointed by the Chancellor, in accordance with Statute 11.1(k) and 11.4 of The Chinese University of Hong Kong Ordinance, as a Member of Council for a further period of three years from 1 January 2026.
