Two CUHK student-athletes wrote a new chapter for Hong Kong at the 15th National Games. Fourth-year student Fong Kit-fung from the Department of Physical Education, Exercise Science and Health, alongside his teammates, clinched Hong Kong’s first-ever gold medal in Rugby Sevens, marking the city’s first gold won on in the National Games. Adam Mak Sai-ting of the same department took bronze in the Men’s 200m breaststroke.

Fong, with his teammates of the Hong Kong China Rugby Team, delivered a stunning performance in the men’s final at the Main Stadium at Kai Tak Sports Park. With iron-willed defense and swift attacks, the team maintained their lead over Shandong throughout. Even though the Shandong team launched a fierce comeback in the second half and briefly took the lead, Hong Kong ultimately secured a 26-19 victory.

“Thanks to everyone who came to the stadium and watched the live stream. I hope this helps more people get to know Hong Kong rugby,” Fong said after the game.

Swimming also saw breakthrough successes for CUHK and Hong Kong. “Breaststroke King” Adam Mak, a third-year student, secured a bronze medal in the men’s 200m breaststroke – his first medal at the National Games, clocking 2:09.93 to better his own Hong Kong record. Mak surged from fifth at the halfway mark, powering through the final metres to clinch third. Mak also delivered impressive performances in the Men’s 50m Breaststroke and Men’s 100m Breaststroke, breaking the Hong Kong record in the 100m semi-final.

“Being able to improve my performance even after achieving a PB (personal best) is really encouraging. It proves that the training direction is correct,” Mak said.

Both Fong and Mak joined CUHK via the Student-athlete Learning Support and Admission Scheme (SASA).
