Honouring excellence: Over 50 CUHK members recognised in 2025 Honours List and appointed as Justices of the Peace

On 1 July, the Government of the Hong Kong SAR announced the 2025 Honours List and Justices of the Peace appointments. CUHK is pleased to note that more than 50 University members were recognised for their remarkable contributions to various sectors of the community and their dedicated public service.

Among all the honourees, Professor John Chai Yat-chiu (above, centre), Chairman of the University Council, was awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star for his exemplary commitment to innovation and technology (I&T) development in Hong Kong. Council members Mr Albert Wong Hak-keung (above, left) and Mr Symon Wong Yu-wing (above, right) were respectively awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star and Medal of Honour in recognition of their notable contributions to the I&T sector and dedicated public service.

Gold Bauhinia Star recipients include:

  • Alumnus Mr Kan Kai-yan, GBS, PDSM, Deputy Commissioner of Police (National Security), honoured for his dedication to safeguarding national security.
  • Honorary fellow Dr Colin Lam Ko-yin, GBS, SBS, honoured for his contributions to community well-being.
  • Alumnus Mr Clement Leung Cheuk-man, GBS, JP, Permanent Secretary for the Civil Service, honoured for long-standing service to the Government.

Silver Bauhinia Star recipients include:

  • Chairman of the University Council Professor John Chai Yat-chiu, SBS, BBS, JP, honoured for his exemplary contributions to innovation and technology development in Hong Kong, particularly through his role as Director of the Board of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park (HSITP) Limited since 2017.
  • Alumnus Mr Rex Chang Wai-yuen, SBS, JP, Director of the Beijing Office of the Hong Kong SAR, honoured for his dedicated service to the Government and the Hong Kong community.
  • Alumnus Mr Vincent Liu Ming-kwong, SBS, JP, former Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, honoured for his distinguished public service.

Bronze Bauhinia Star recipients include:

  • Alumna Miss Kathleen Au Oi-ning, BBS, JP, Deputy Commissioner for Digital Policy of the Digital Policy Office, honoured for her longstanding public service.
  • Alumna Ms Chiu Wing-lan, BBS, Director of Management Services for the Police, honoured for her significant contributions to safeguarding national security.
  • Alumnus Mr Donald Mak Chi-kui, BBS, Deputy Commissioner for Digital Policy of the Digital Policy Office, honoured for his long and dedicated service to the Government and the Hong Kong community.
  • Council member and alumnus Mr Albert Wong Hak-keung, BBS, honoured for his notable contributions in supporting local technology enterprises and start-ups, and in promoting the development of Hong Kong’s innovation and technology ecosystem.
  • Alumnus Dr William Wong Ming-fung, BBS, SC, JP, honoured for his devotion to promoting the upholding of the Basic Law and enhancing public awareness of the rule of law.
  • Alumna Ms Wong Yin-yee, BBS, JP, former Deputy Director of the Social Welfare Department, honoured for her longstanding public service.

Members of the CUHK community were also recognised across a broad spectrum of honours, including awards for Distinguished and Meritorious Service in the Disciplined Services and the ICAC, the Medal of Honour, the Chief Executive’s Commendation for Community and Chief Executive’s Commendation for Government/Public Service. 

In addition, the following members of the University community were appointed as Justices of the Peace by the Chief Executive:

  • Alumnus Professor Fan Hoi-kit, MH, JP
  • Alumna Ms Nancy Kwan Shuk-yee, JP
  • Alumna Ms Catherine Law Sui-fong, JP
  • Alumna Ms Ma Mei-wah, JP
  • Alumnus Dr Axel Siu Yuet-chung, JP
  • Alumna Ms Tam Wai-yi, JP
  • Alumnus Dr Wong Wang, JP
