Professor Eric Chung named Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics fellow

11 June 2025

Professor Eric Chung Tsz-shun from the Department of Mathematics, who is also Executive Director of the Zhizhen School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences, has been named Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) in the class of 2025. The only scholar from Asia to receive this honour this year, Professor Chung is recognised for his research contributions to numerical analysis and multiscale methods.

“I am deeply honoured to be named as a SIAM Fellow. This recognition affirms the impact of my research in applied and computational mathematics, particularly numerical methods for partial differential equations, multiscale modelling and simulations, and scientific computing,” Professor Chung said. “These areas are critical to solving complex problems in industry, science and engineering. I hope my work continues to contribute to the advancement of science and technology globally.”

Professor Chung received his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in mathematics from CUHK in 1998 and 2000 respectively. He obtained his PhD in 2005 from the University of California, Los Angeles. Before joining CUHK, he worked at the University of California, Irvine as a Visting Assistant Professor, and then at the California Institute of Technology as a von Kármán Instructor. He is the recipient of the 2017 Hong Kong Mathematical Society Young Scholar Award, the 2022 ICCM Silver Medal of Mathematics and the 2025 Frontiers of Science Award. Professor Chung has more than 200 research publications in Science Citation Index (SCI) ranked mathematical journals. He currently serves as the associate editor of 10 SCI ranked international mathematical journals including Multiscale Modeling and Simulation, Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics, and Computers & Mathematics with Applications.

SIAM is the world’s largest and most influential society in applied mathematics and computational science. The non-profit conveys mathematical knowledge to professionals in other fields for practical, industrial, or scientific applications. SIAM boasts 14,000 individual members and 500 institutional members including academic, manufacturing, research and development, service and consulting, and military and government organisations worldwide.
