The Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies (HKIAPS) at CUHK launched a public policy forum series on 30 May to mark its 35th anniversary. The event attracted more than 50 local politicians, scholars and members of the public, while nearly 100 participated via live streaming.
Mr Stephen Wong Yuen-shan, Head of the Chief Executive’s Policy Unit of the Hong Kong government, and Professor Anthony Fung Ying-him, Dean of CUHK’s Faculty of Social Science and Director of HKIAPS, delivered opening remarks. Mr Lei Haiqiu, Director of Research Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, also attended the event. Amid the increasingly complex international geopolitics, the event provided a platform for aspiring individuals to share their insights into and policy recommendations for governance in Hong Kong, fostering steady development under the “One Country, Two Systems” framework.
The forum delved into key topics covering nurturing political leaders, governance, and the implementation of “One Country, Two Systems”. The discussions aimed to equip aspiring leaders with insights needed for effective governance and unlock their core political potential.
Three distinguished speakers shared their insights: Professor Lau Siu-kai, Emeritus Professor of Department of Sociology at CUHK, elaborated on the critical role of governance talent in Hong Kong’s future development; Professor Anthony Cheung Bing-leung, Chair Professor and Advisor (Public Administration) of Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies at The Education University of Hong Kong, analysed the governance opportunities and challenges facing Hong Kong, exploring how the city can leverage its strengths to tackle current issues; and Mr Cheung Chi-kong, Executive Director of the One Country Two Systems Research Institute, focused on the practical challenges and future prospects of the “One Country, Two Systems”.
