CUHK students present innovative development proposals to Indonesian tourism officials

28 May 2025

CUHK students presented their innovative business strategies to Indonesian tourism officials and an enterprise for boosting the appeal of a new tourism hub in a fruitful field trip earlier this month.

In the trip to Labuan Bajo, organised by the Co-op@CUHK initiative, 41 second-year students from the Interdisciplinary Data Analytics & X Double Major Programme explored the natural environment and socio-economic development in the area from 10 to 18 May.

The students present their innovative business solutions and development strategies on Labuan Bajo’s on-site issues to Indonesian tourism officials and senior executives of the state-owned enterprise

They conducted field studies of the local natural landscape, the vibrant cultural diversity and the business ecosystem with guidance from advisors of PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry Property (IFPRO), a state-owned enterprise engaged in the provision of services, retail, trade and property management to boost national tourism. The students formed teams to investigate key issues such as supply chain management, marina ecosystem sustainability, community development, agricultural innovation and the business growth requirements of IFPRO.

Applying their academic expertise, the students analysed Indonesia’s economic data, cultural dynamics and urban development trends, and developed tailored solutions and strategies that addressed IFPRO’s specific needs. They presented their findings to a panel of local government officials and IFPRO’s senior management, showcasing the students’ innovation and profession.

Reflecting on his experience, Gordon Lam Tsz-chung says: “The field trip to Labuan Bajo provided me with a deeper insight into Indonesia’s economic potential and commitment to growth. Interacting directly with local industry leaders and government officials not only widens my understanding of Southeast Asian economies but also shows me how I should effectively apply academic knowledge in real-world business situations.”

The field trip not only offered CUHK students international exposure but also underscored the adaptability and competence of Hong Kong’s youth in navigating various cultural and business landscapes. As Hong Kong fortifies its ties with Southeast Asian economies, Co-op@CUHK is dedicated to cultivating future leaders who are prepared to address global challenges, while showcasing the substantial potential and value of Hong Kong’s youthful talent on the world stage.
