Professor Robin Huang Hui from the CUHK Faculty of Law has won the Second-class Award in Books and Theses at the 9th Round Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards (Humanities and Social Sciences) by the Ministry of Education of China. The award highlights his pioneering work in the field of fintech regulation.
Professor Huang’s book, Fintech Regulation in China: Principles, Policies and Practices (Cambridge University Press, 2021), is the first English-language monograph to systematically examine how China develops and regulates its fintech sector. It was completed in 2020, a time when the industry underwent a rapid digital transformation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The book explores the regulatory frameworks and governance models shaping Chinese fintech, analysing the institutional factors behind China’s approach. It also compares China’s model with major jurisdictions like the US, UK, Singapore, and Hong Kong, providing an in-depth understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the Chinese experience and making recommendations for improvement
CUHK Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Sham Mai-har said: “Professor Huang’s work not only systematically deconstructs the institutional logic of fintech regulation in China but also examines the Chinese model within a global governance framework through comparative research. This provides policymakers and academia with a reference that combines theoretical insights with practical relevance, while also highlighting CUHK’s commitment to the humanities and social sciences, as well as its international outlook”.
