Cooking up for inclusion
Jointly organised by CUHK’s Diversity and Inclusion Office (DIO) and the Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas), the launch ceremony of the Towngas Co•Uni Inclusion Programme took place on 9 July. CUHK students and staff of Towngas got hands-on experience of making Southeast Asian cuisine at the Cooking with Inclusion session after the ceremony.
“This activity not only helps us learn cookery, but also deepens our understanding of the food culture of other ethnic groups,” said Mr Tang (right, photo above), a Towngas employee. Ms Ng (centre, photo above), a CUHK student, commented that the atmosphere was good. “We had excellent interaction and sharing with other participants, which enhanced our mutual understanding.” Nayab (left, photo above), a member of the ethnic minorities from WEDO GLOBAL, added that “It is a meaningful event. The programme enables more people to appreciate Southeast Asian cuisines, which is invaluable.”
CUHK’s pilot inclusion programme, sponsored by Towngas, provides a series of cultural experience activities for CUHK students and Towngas colleagues, with the aim of deepening their understanding of and stimulating their interest in different cultures, while appreciating the needs of ethnic minorities and disadvantaged groups.
The programme consists of three activities: Cooking with Inclusion, Experiencing Audio Description and Sustainable Beer Workshop.
At the ceremony, Ms Dora Dai, Director of DIO, remarked, “Diversity and inclusion are especially important to our students and our community. Through this pilot programme, CUHK collaborates with leading corporations that actively engage in their social responsibilities to enhance the understanding of environmental, social, governance, diversity and inclusion among CUHK students and working professionals.”
The DIO will continue to engage leading commercial and community partners to promote social harmony, inclusion and the spirit of mutual help, and ultimately have a positive impact on society.
