19 September 2025
Ms Vivian Ip Wing-wun, Lecturer of CUHK’s Department of Music and Associate Conductor of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, took third prize at the 2025 International Ferenc Fricsay Conducting Competition in Hungary earlier this month, becoming the first Hong Kong musician to win in the event. Standing out from 460 peers from around the world, Ms Ip’s exceptional artistry and leadership shows Hong Kong’s growing influence in the global music scene. The competition is presided by a jury formed by world-renowned musicians and opens doors for winners to prestigious guest-conducting engagements with major international orchestras.
“To stand out among 460 fellow conductors and claim third place in this competition is an immense honour and fills me with gratitude,” Ms Ip said. “Conducting is by no means easy; it requires tremendous effort, focus and perseverance. This achievement is not just the result of my personal hard work but also the culmination of the support, encouragement and opportunities provided by my family, friends and mentors. Without their companionship, understanding and belief in me, I could not have achieved this.”
