Two students from CUHK’s Physical Education, Exercise Science & Health Programme achieved exceptional results at the 2025 FISU World University Games, clinching a gold and a silver medal in the event held in Germany’s Rhine-Ruhr region in July.
Third-year student Adam Mak Sai-ting continued to make history for Hong Kong, claiming the silver medal after clocking 2:10.53 in the men’s 200m breaststroke, and becoming the first male swimmer from the Hong Kong Team to reach the podium in the history of the Games. Table tennis player Yiu Kwan-to, a second-year student, also achieved stellar results at the Games, where he and his teammate Baldwin Chan Ho-wah, from the City University of Hong Kong, won the men’s doubles event for Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong breaststroke record holder, Adam delivered a stunning performance throughout the competition, breaking four Hong Kong records. “My days at the World University Games passed by in the blink of an eye, and I never thought that I would be able to break so many records,” said Adam. “I am grateful to CUHK, the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education and the Physical Education Unit for their never-ending support. I will continue to do my best, and push myself to newer heights.”

After a five-set match, Kwan-to and Baldwin emerged victorious against their Japanese competitors, winning four sets to one to achieve Hong Kong’s first men’s doubles gold in table tennis at the World University Games. Kwan-to was ecstatic about the result: “My teammate and I played brilliantly in this men’s doubles victory. We trusted each other, and the work we put in showed through every stroke of our paddles; when we encountered difficulties, we talked over our tactics and responded accordingly. This win is not only an affirmation of our efforts, but also encourages us to win more in future!”
